In serious condition Marco Santagata, writer and literary critic – Corriere.it

Marco Santagata, writer, literary critic and university professor, author of essays and novels, in serious condition in hospital in Pisa. Contrary to the news that had spread at first, the scholar was not dead but in an irreversible coma. He fell ill with Covid-19, with the virus grafted onto an already delicate clinical situation.

His narrative work As a woman in love, from 2015 (Guanda), was a finalist for the Strega Award. In 2003 he won the Campiello Prize with The master of pale saints and in 2006 the Stresa Award for Narrative with Love in s (both published by Guanda). Internationally renowned Italianist, the curator of Dante’s works in the Meridiani Mondadori edition.

Born in Zocca (Modena) in 1947, Santagata completed his university studies in Pisa, as an ordinary student and then as a graduate of the Scuola Normale Superiore. Full Professor of Italian Literature since 1980, after three years at the Faculty of Education in Cagliari, since 1984 he has taught at the Faculty of Arts in Pisa. He mainly dealt with Italian opera with particular attention to the first centuries. Numerous are his studies dedicated to Francesco Petrarca and Petrarchism. Other areas of investigation are i Do you sing by Giacomo Leopardi and Italian poetry between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Pascoli and d’Annunzio).
