TRIBUNPALU.COM – Brucellosis, an infectious disease caused by the Brucella bacteria, is currently breaking out in Lanzhou, China and has infected more than 6,000 people.
As reported by Kompas.com, yesterday (6/11/2020); brucellosis is a zoonotic disease or disease in animals that can be transmitted to humans.
This disease can attack various animals, such as sheep, goats, cows, pigs and even dog.
This also raises the question, whether brucellosis can attack human pets, such as dogs and cat, in Indonesia?
As explained by drh Dhara Pieshesa, a veterinarian in Surabaya, brucellosis is common in livestock in developing countries.
For pets, this disease is more common in dogs than in cats.
“In cats, although they can be infected with Brucella, cats tend to be resistant and rarely reported cases of brucellosis in cats,” he said in a short message received by Kompas.com, Saturday (7/11/2020).
Brucellosis is transmitted to pets through direct contact with previously infected animals, or through food contaminated with Brucella bacteria.
When brucellosis occurs, symptoms that appear in animals include:
- fever
- thinness
- ochitis or inflammation of the testicles
- anestrus or show no symptoms of estrus for a long time)
- arthritis or arthritis
- testicular enlargement
- abortion or miscarriage
Unfortunately, there is no vaccine to prevent it Brucellosis in dogs, although it is present in farm animals.
If you suspect your pet is infected Brucellosis, immediately take it to the vet for antibiotic therapy because this disease can be cured.
Conversely, if left untreated, brucellosis can cause death; although the mortality rate is low, which is around 2-5 percent.
