Federal government decides on new aid measures

The federal government is considering a variety of measures to support companies forced to close down by the second lockdown. The entire arsenal that was deployed in March-April is back on the table. “We’re not going to invent hot water, are we”, a source indicates.

The core cabinet is partly looking at the support that was issued for the catering industry. He can appeal to a double bridging right, the temporary unemployment for the self-employed so to speak. In addition, the hotel and catering industry will receive a postponement of payment on its social security contributions and can appeal to a global system of postponement of payment. That is on top of the Flemish support, which accounts for 10 percent of a company’s turnover. In addition, a further extension of temporary unemployment itself is also on the table. Many companies and employees will have to count on it to survive.

Minister of the Self-Employed and SMEs David Clarinval (MR) told French-speaking media that for his portfolio alone there are about 38 measures on the table.

The problem is that for the second time in a year, the federal government has to open the portfolio with a grand opening. In the tables that the government sent to Europe, it was about 12.7 billion euros in aid measures in 2020. “And next year we will not leave anyone behind”, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) argues. “We will continue to do what is necessary to support everyone as much as possible and give them the opportunity to bridge this difficult period.”
