LG Slide smartphone as an alternative to LG Rollable

LG is frequently discussed this week. First, LetsGoDigital was able to discover a highly detailed utility patent containing a pull-out LG smartphone met oprolbaar display was shown. On the day of our publication, LG Corp. also a trademark in Europe for the matching name ‘LG Rollable‘. At the time, we assumed this will likely be the name of LG’s anticipated ‘Project B’ smartphone – which, like the Wing will be housed within the Explorer Project.

However, it seems that LG has not yet made a final decision on the product name whether LG must have two devices in development with a special design. This time, the Korean manufacturer registers a trademark for the name ‘LG Slide’.

On November 4, 2020, two days after the application for LG Rollable, LG Corp filed a trademark with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) under the name ‘LG Slide’. The application has been resubmitted by intermediary Mitscherlich Patent- und Rechtsanwälte from Munich, Germany. The description reads:

LG Slide trademark description : smartphones; digital mobile phones; electronic touch screen pen for smartphones; earphones for smartphones; smartwatches; smartphones; tablet computers.

The description is the same as that of LG Rollable. It is therefore certainly not inconceivable that this will be one and the same device. All the more because the short teaser shown by LG Electronics appears to be an extendable (slide) device with a rollable display. Both names would therefore be appropriate.

LG’s retractable smartphone under development is reported to be released in March 2021. It is clear that LG is now busy with the preparations for the launch.

It is not the first time that LG has submitted such trademark applications. For example, the company already filed a trademark for the name in April last year LG The Roll, the names Double Roll, Dual Roll, Bi-Roll and Roll Canvas were also recorded simultaneously. The names also came LG Bendi, Flex, Foldi en Duplex over.

In our opinion, the new names for LG Rollable and LG Slide are better alternatives. Moreover, we are getting closer to the launch date, making it more likely that LG will use either the name Rollable or the name Slide as the model name for the new ‘Project B’ smartphone.
