Speaking at the TBMM Plan and Budget Committee during the negotiations of the 2021 budgets of the Ministry of National Education and affiliated institutions and organizations, CHP Balıkesir Deputy Fikret Şahin brought the equality of opportunity in education to the agenda.
Stating that Minister Ziya Selçuk, who made a presentation by participating in the commission, published the “Education Vision for 2023” document in 2018, but the problems are getting bigger and bigger, Şahin said:
That sixteen-year-old wreck has grown to become an eighteen-year-old wreck now. Your theory is very good, I said that if you match it with your practice, you will be a minister who can go down in history, but I am sorry to determine that: Your practice is very bad, the patient is left at the table and the education system is dying. Believe me, you are not successful and are you considering quitting? I think from that point on now, think about it. ”
‘PRIVATE SCHOOL’ REACTION
Reminding that the Minister of National Education first of all stated that it should ensure equality of opportunity in education in 2018 meetings, Selçuk said, “We will gradually reduce the support of private education institutions and we think to increase the equality of opportunity in education,” Şahin continued:
“Look, the rate of private education institutions has increased to 20.2 percent. Absolutely no equality of opportunity in education in Turkey at the moment; The more money you have, the more education you can get. Believe me, very smart children in the village, in the countryside, are devastated. Hold these hands. Children are getting miserable. As the son of an illiterate mother who grew up in a neighborhood school, and today I’m speaking to you as a deputy, it is thanks to my coming to evaluate the equality of opportunity that this national education gives me. But right now, believe me, if I were a student during your Ministry, I wouldn’t be anything. “
