Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Wednesday. FC Zenit drew 1-1 against Lazio.
Donny van de Beek had a basic place at Manchester United, but played unobtrusively and was replaced after an hour. At that moment Istanbul Basaksehir was already leading 2-1. Timothy Fosu-Mensah played as a substitute for the last fifteen minutes.
United’s rearguard shot quite well with the goals against. First, the 35-year-old Demba Ba got a free passage to goalkeeper Dean Henderson (1-0) and later Edin Visca completed a cross from former Go Ahead Eagles player Deniz Türüç, after a clumsy loss of the English (2-0).
On the stroke of half time United came back into the game thanks to a striking header from Anthony Martial. Also in the second half, the game of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team remained poor and there were hardly any chances of the equalizer. It wasn’t until injury time that United was close to 2-2 when Mehmet Topal almost shot into his own goal, but another player from Basaksehir took the ball off the line.
The defeat means the first loss of points for United in the Champions League. Basaksehir just took his first points after two previous defeats.
