Due to its great importance, dozens of journalists and cameramen have come to a press conference of the chairman of the voting committee, Al Schmidt. After a night without sleep, he comes out for an update: 141,000 votes counted, more than 200,000 to go. “It’s work, work, work.”
Because it was already expected that the postal votes in Pennsylvania would be decisive, every effort was made to count them as quickly as possible. Since yesterday morning, about a hundred employees have been working day and night. Staff take turns, but do not stop until the last postal vote has been counted.
“Of course we can’t say exactly when that will be,” says Schmidt. When everything is running at full speed, around 10,000 votes per hour can be counted in the hall. “But people take turns, that takes time. The workplaces are also cleaned in between.” Schmidt certainly expects to be busy today, and possibly also tomorrow.
