The 2020 New York Marathon will not take place. The organizers of the world’s most famous marathon have decided to cancel the event, which was scheduled to take place on November 1, 2020. The decision was made “due to the coronavirus and health concerns for runners, spectators, volunteers and all the partners who participate in the event, ”explain the New York Road Runners, the organizers.
The cancellation was immediately supported by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. “While the marathon is an iconic and beloved event in our city, I applaud the New York Road Runners for putting the health and safety of spectators and runners first,” writes the mayor.
Each year, the New York Marathon brings together more than 50,000 competitors from 5 continents. Since the creation of the event in 1970, this is the second time that the marathon has been canceled. The first cancellation took place in 2012, after the passage of Hurricane Sandy.
What solutions for the participants?
The 50th edition is therefore postponed to 2021. Concretely, the organizers will contact each of the participants by July 15, 2020 in order to study the various possibilities. Those who were scheduled to run the 2020 marathon will be able to choose between a full refund of the participation fee or a deferral for marathons scheduled for 2021, 2022 or 2023.
Competitors will also be invited to participate in a virtual marathon, which will take place from October 17 to November 1, 2020. Here too, the organizers will contact everyone with all the practical information.
