Because of the corona pandemic, New York City has moved its restaurant scene to the sidewalks and streets in many places – this has resulted in a street dining atmosphere in the metropolis.

Some streets in Manhattan or Queens are lined with new outdoor wooden terraces these days. Sometimes they are brightly painted or decorated with flowers and are usually well attended. “Congratulations America – you just invented Europe,” wrote a journalist recently on Twitter about a photo of Smith Street in Brooklyn, describing the new summer flair pretty well.
Usually roads in the US belong to cars, but in times of low traffic and a need for more space between people, many streets have been converted into pedestrian zones. Especially on weekends, they are more reminiscent of street parties with a little more distance.
“We really suffered, but now business is picking up again,” says the manager of a restaurant in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn. His new terrace is now full every day. But concerns about a corona relapse continue to resonate: After the successful fight against the virus and significantly lower numbers in New York, there is growing concern that visitors from other parts of the USA could give the infection rate in the metropolis a new boost. So far, however, it looks like the New York European atmosphere could last a little longer. (dpa)
