A difficult return to work led to old-age poverty for Jutta P. With the donation from FR-Altenhilfe, she is realizing a long-cherished dream.
The donation from FR-Altenhilfe comes at the right time for Jutta P. (name changed). With the money she wants to realize a wish that she has tried to save in vain: to swap the more than 20-year-old, used armchair in her small apartment for a new one. A good 50 years ago she could not have imagined that she would have to live in old-age poverty and with housing benefit.
The now 80-year-old was born in Heidelberg, where she trained as a retail saleswoman in a household goods store after finishing school. With her degree in her pocket, she moved to Frankfurt in 1961, where she found employment with a credit card company. She later switched to an insurance company, where she met her future husband. “It was an exotic marriage back then,” she says. Not only because he was 19 years older, but the lawyer, without recognition of his degree in Germany, came from Indonesia.

With a smile, P. notices that she did not want to accept the conservative image of women of her time. “We were a little crazy, the 1968 generation,” she says. When her husband, who among other things also spoke Spanish, suggested building a future in Tenerife, P. did not hesitate long to implement the emigration plan with his child, a son, and Kegel. Her husband opened a small restaurant and she opened a boutique. After four years, the dream that had come true ended suddenly. “The oil crisis in the early 1970s hit us hard,” says the senior citizen. But homesickness has also increased.
“When we returned to Frankfurt, we immediately got an apartment from the office,” she praises the city’s support. However, the couple didn’t get off so well professionally. He no longer got his job as a translator. “He worked in a travel agency that paid below the tariff,” says Jutta P .. She herself found accommodation in a department store in the sales department. In order to be able to better provide for the family of three, she took a part-time job in the administration of a large construction company. The company slid into bankruptcy before P’s retirement. On top of all this, her husband died in the late 1990s.
“Today I’m just getting by. I try to make the best of it, ”says Jutta P. In addition to the necessary expenses, there are costs for medication because of her joint disease. “The cash registers don’t pay for everything either. I could apply for an exemption card, but it costs money again, ”she says. Because of her illness, she can only walk with restrictions. “I used to be athletic and took part in trips organized by the local sports club,” reports the 80-year-old. Yet she does not know loneliness. “I feel most comfortable alone now. The peers are also often too old-fashioned for me, “says the old 68er.
