Berlin schools receive mobile air cleaning devices

At its meeting today, Senate of Education Sandra Scheeres decided to equip Berlin schools with mobile air cleaning devices. According to this, around 1200 mobile air purification devices will be procured for schools whose classrooms are difficult to ventilate due to the structural situation. A total of 4.5 million euros are available for the purchase. In rooms without adequate ventilation, these devices can greatly reduce the risk of infection from aerosols for employees and schoolchildren and thus the further spread of Covid-19.

Sandra Scheeres, Senator for Education, Youth and Family: “All service staff in the schools deserve great recognition because they keep the school going in the current situation. In doing so, they ensure that Berlin schoolchildren can make use of their right to education. The acquisition of air purification devices is one of numerous measures to significantly limit the incidence of infection. ”

Tests with air purification devices lasting several weeks have already taken place at three schools. The response from the schools themselves was positive. The Berlin Charité also looked at the devices and made recommendations.

On the basis of scientific recommendations, the hygiene advisory board convened by Senator Scheeres has also laid down clear rules for ventilation management in Berlin’s schools. In order to practice ventilation, the Senate Education Administration has also provided the schools with CO2 measuring devices. With the help of these devices, the teachers deployed in the classes can see when exactly push and draft ventilation is necessary. The hygiene advisory board, which includes representatives from science, medicine and the school community, has developed the step-by-step plans for the schools, which will be used for the first time this week. Here, the infection rate of each individual school is considered and classified according to several criteria.
