WhatsApp is working on disappearing messages. In the future, the chat service will allow messages to automatically disappear from recipient devices after seven days. This can be done in group chats as well as in individual conversations.
The feature isn’t available at this point, but WhatsApp already mentions it in an FAQ. With this function, it becomes possible for users to set messages to automatically disappear during conversations. It is not possible to set a time limit for this yourself, as is possible with many other chat apps. The messages will automatically disappear after seven days. If a recipient does not open the app for seven days, it is still possible to see the message in a notification.
The feature cannot be enabled for specific messages, but for all new messages sent in a chat. In group chats, only admins can turn on or off disappearing messages.
In a few cases, the disappearing messages will remain available. This happens, for example, if a user responds to a specific message. The original will then remain in the quote. Even if a message is forwarded or if a backup is made, the original messages are preserved. It is not known when the function will actually become available. WhatsApp is already experimenting there last a few months, but with the FAQ going online, the feature seems to be close to release.
