NEW YORK – New York City has seen a notable increase in crime unlike the same period during 2019. This was released by the most recent report from the city’s Police Department (NYPD, for its acronym in English),
According to the report, during the month of October, the number of arrests for firearms incidents in all counties increased by 102.4%, or 502 during 2020 as opposed to 248 in 2019.
On the other hand, during the month of October there was also a 121% increase in the number of shootings throughout the city, 137 unlike the 62 reported in 2019. Likewise, the number of robberies grew by 32.2%, from 1,363 in this month compared to 1,031 in 2019.
Despite the increase in crime, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea assures that the department has worked and continues to work for the safety of the community despite the pandemic, the increase in crime and the protests that have been presented in 2020.
“Our tireless men and women of the Uniformed are here to serve New Yorkers and keep everyone safe in every neighborhood,” said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea. “We will continue to be relentless in our mission to ensure public safety by working hand-in-hand with those we have sworn to serve and provide fair and exceptional law enforcement services.”
Other numbers that have increased are the murders throughout 2020, which have risen by 37.2%, that is 387 so far this year as opposed to the 282 reported in 2019.
However, some statistics have decreased, for example, rapes fell to -17.5%, from 127 reported in October 2020 to 154 reported in 2019.
