Macron after Vienna attack: ‘This is our Europe’ | Abroad

“After France, it is a friendly country that is under attack. This is our Europe. Our enemies need to know who they are dealing with. We will not give in to anything, ”said Macron.

Several attacks took place in France in recent weeks. French teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded after discussing Charlie Hebdo cartoons in class. Two weeks later, there were attacks in Nice and Avignon and a guard from the French consulate in Saudi Arabia was stabbed.

Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz thanks all emergency services on Twitter. Kurz says he is happy that a perpetrator has already been eliminated. “We will never allow ourselves to be intimidated by terrorism and will fight these attacks by all means.” He also announces that the army is being deployed. “The whole country is in mind with the victims, injured people and their families, to whom I express my deepest condolences.”

Rutte: a terrible attack

Prime Minister Mark Rutte speaks on Twitter of “a terrible attack.” “On behalf of the Netherlands, I have just expressed our unconditional support to Sebastian Kurz with the victims, their families and the Austrian government in coming to terms with this horrible act.”

The Dutch ambassador to Austria is calling on people in Vienna to stay indoors. “The police deployment in Vienna is still going on. If you are in town, stay inside! ”, Aldrik Gierveld writes on Twitter.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is monitoring the situation closely and is investigating whether there are Dutch among the victims. ‘Are you in Vienna? Follow the instructions of the local government ”, is the advice.

‘Stronger than hate and terror’

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, says she is shocked and sad after the attack. “Europe is in full solidarity with Austria. We are stronger than hatred and terror. ”
