Everyone held their breath on Monday morning as rescue workers were digging at one of eight collapsed buildings in Izmir. They had previously taken little Elif’s mother and three siblings from under the rubble of the Doğanlar apartment building. The rescue workers did not give up hope, day and night they kept looking for three-year-old Elif. Until there were cheers 65 hours after the earthquake. The rescue workers had made a hole in the rubble. There she lay, eyes closed. The worst was feared. “Her face was completely white with dust,” says the firefighter who found her on the Turkish news channel NTV. “When I wiped the dust off her face, she opened her eyes.”
