Johnny Depp has the lawsuit against the British tabloid The Sun lost. The lawyer of the newspaper leaves that up on Monday Twitter know. The actor accused the newspaper of defamation after calling him ‘wife beater’.
The judge ruled that the newspaper could attribute the words to the actor. Depp allegedly “proved the necessary elements in his alleged defamation case”, but News Group Newspapers (the publisher of the tabloid) “did not spread falsehoods”, according to the judge.
A spokesman for The Sun thanks Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard for her contribution to the cause. “A victim of domestic violence should never be silenced.”
In 2018, the newspaper posted an opinion piece in which Depp wrote a ‘wife beater‘(‘ woman swatter ‘) is mentioned because he is said to have repeatedly assaulted his ex-wife Heard. The actor has denied this.
The article in question was written by editor Dan Wootton in response to statements by JK Rowling, who praised Depp’s casting in the film adaptation of her book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Wootton wrote in his piece Not Understanding that Depp will still get this chance, after what he would have done. The actor, in turn, sued the tabloid for defamation and demanded £ 200,000 (EUR 220,000) and an undeclared damages.
Depp engaged in another case with Heard
Depp and Heard finally separated in 2017 after a legal battle. After reaching a settlement, Depp paid $ 7 million (about $ 6 million) to his ex.
Heard also acted as a witness in the case, the hearings of which took place in July. “It has been incredibly painful to relive my breakup, to see my intentions and truth questioned, and to see the most traumatic details of my life shared with Johnny,” said the actress.
Depp has another case against his ex. He is suing Heard for 50 million dollars (more than 42 million euros) because of a column she wrote about domestic violence. Also in this article, the actor is accused of assaulting his ex.
