It was a bloody weekend: 24 people were shot dead in New York on Saturday alone. Mayor Bill de Blasio is shocked and speaks of a worrying trend. “We will not allow the armed violence in this city to increase,” he said at a press conference. And: “We’re not going back to the bad old days when there was so much violence in this city,” he said.

However, many police officers believe that it is now getting worse. As the “New York Post” writes, they warned that the new wave of violence could become normal. Because according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) there were more shootings this June than in almost a quarter of a century – in the first three weeks of June there were around 125 incidents.

53 shootings in a few days
From Monday to Sunday alone, there were 53 incidents in the city that resulted in shooting. The New YorkPolice Commissioner Dermot Shea spoke to the television station “NY1” about a Herculean task – it was now time to fight the problem.
–
“We’ve been on this path for a while and the shootings are just the latest symptom,” Shea said.

One possible cause: Just last week Shea announced that a civil anti-crime unit had to be disbanded because of numerous complaints against its members. The unit was tasked with finding and confiscating illegal weapons. (bra)
