In Nijmegen, a team of medical staff has their mustaches for new research against prostate cancer. At the Radboud UMC, a new study is being carried out in patients who have been retreated.
About 80,000 men have prostate cancer in the Netherlands. 15,000 people have metastatic cancer, who are treated with hormone therapy. If that doesn’t work, they still have two to three years to live.
Need a lot of money
Oncologist Niven Mehra is one of the doctors participating in the campaign. He hopes to raise a lot of money with the promotion. “Thanks to new DNA research, patients with an untreated form of prostate cancer can still be treated successfully. The Radboud UMC could well have got hold of Columbus’ egg and is looking for a lot of money to expand the research so that other patients also have better prospects, ”says Mehra.
An annual event is called in November Movember. Many men leave their mustaches to draw attention to prostate cancer. The trend has come over from Australia.
