De Hagenaar went for a run at the end of August but did not come home. An emotional appeal from his daughter mobilized dozens of people who went on a joint search from Aegonplein in The Hague.

In addition to the major searches, posters were posted in the Haagse Bos and in the Meijendel dune area calling for witnesses.
