Because of the corona pandemic, the “NYC Marathon” had to be canceled. But that didn’t stop 35 people from holding their own event in Leipzig.
Leipzig – Actually, the 50th “New York City Marathon” should have taken place in the Big Apple over the weekend. But the corona pandemic thwarted the mega-event. However, that didn’t stop 35 runners from entering Leipzig organize their very own, virtual “NYC marathon”.

Every year tens of thousands of runners come to New York City to show their stamina and fitness in the world’s largest marathon.
And even though this was not possible in 2020 due to the corona virus, the organizers of the Leipzig Marathon did not want to take the fun away. And so they organized their own version of the run yesterday, Saturday.
The route, which was just as long as the New York route at 42.195 kilometers, led through Leipzig and could be viewed precisely on a running app.
A total of 35 runners started on Saturday morning, after 2 hours and 46 minutes the winner Nic Ihlow arrived at the finish line, and by 3 p.m. the other participants had also made it to the finish line.
The marathon was all about humanity: thanks to some generous running sponsors who donated money for every kilometer covered, 7,500 euros were collected by the end of the event. The sum should be donated in kind to the Children’s Heart Center Leipzig and Haus Leben e. V. be handed over.

The charity project was organized by Olympiasport Leipzig (OSL) GmbH. Managing Authorized Officer Katharina Baum is happy about the result: “In keeping with the spirit of the sporting team spirit, we sent an important message in difficult times: Sport unites and although there is currently a lot of doubt, we want to think of those who have to take on much greater challenges “.
