By October, MTPL insurers have reimbursed 2.52 million euros / day to state and local government institutions

According to LTAB representative Gints Lazdins, the largest part – 1.15 million euros – was paid to the State Social Insurance Agency (SSIA) for pensions and benefits for the disabled.

This amount has almost doubled compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, approximately 600,000 euros were paid to the National Health Service for state-paid medical services for victims of road traffic accidents (RTAs), while another 430,000 euros were paid to the SSIA for compensation of persons for a temporary incapacity for work certificate. Another 270,000 euros – SSIA for pensions and benefits for dependents.

Commenting on the remuneration paid, the Chairman of the Board of LTAB Jānis Abāšins points out that it is one sixth higher than the amount reimbursed to state and local government institutions in a similar period last year, when 2.10 million euros were allocated.

With regard to the costs incurred by insurers in connection with MTPL claims, Abashin explains that indemnities for the prevention of vehicle damage are most often mentioned, but the costs incurred by insurers in reimbursing the state for the treatment of RTA victims, maintenance in medical institutions, and benefits paid are unjustifiably forgotten. .

“In addition, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as the payment of state benefits after a RTA can last for several years or even a lifetime, which means that losses for RTA in 2007 and earlier will be reimbursed this year,” says the Chairman of the Board of LTAB.

Over the last ten years, the remuneration paid by MTPL to state and local government budget institutions has averaged two to three million euros annually.

In total, in the period from 2010 to 2019, MTPL insurers and LTAB reimbursed state and local government institutions for indemnities in the amount of 24,771,135 euros.

The MTPL system was introduced in Latvia in 1997. The right to take out MTPL insurance in Latvia is AAS “Balta”, AAS “Baltijas Apdrošināšanas Nams”, AAS “BTA Baltic Insurance Company”, “Compensa Vienna Insurance Group” ADB Latvian branch, “ERGO Insurance” SE Latvian branch, ADB “Gjensidige” Latvian branch , Latvian branch of If P&C Insurance AS and Latvian branch of Swedbank P&C Insurance AS.
