New York State plans to dissolve the National Rifle Association, NRA. The reason: For decades, the gun lobby served as a “breeding ground for greed, abuse and shameless violation of the law”.
New York State has filed a lawsuit against the gun lobby NRA with the aim of disbanding the politically influential group. Attorney General Letitia James accused the National Rifle Association leadership on Thursday of siphoning off millions. “The influence of the NRA was so strong that the organization was not controlled for decades while the leadership squeezed millions in their own pockets,” she said.
Lawsuit is directed against the NRA and four managers
The NRA has served as a “breeding ground for greed, abuse and shameless violation of the law”. The District of Columbia Government also announced a lawsuit with a similar thrust. The NRA called the allegations groundless and spoke of an attack on the constitutional rights of gun owners.
The New York lawsuit is directed against the NRA as a whole, as well as four high-ranking managers by name. Accordingly, contracts are said to have been given to close friends and family members to enrich them. In addition, sham deals were closed with former employees in order to “buy their silence and further loyalty”. Violations by the NRA against its own statutes and federal and state laws have resulted in a loss of more than $ 64 million in three years. This led to the NRA in the red in 2018.
The NRA is traditionally close to President Donald Trump’s Republicans, while James is a Democrat. In front of journalists, the attorney general rejected the idea that the lawsuit was motivated by the NRA’s proximity to Trump. In an initial statement, the president said the state of Texas would be a good place for a new NRA headquarters. This is currently in the state of Virginia. The organization, founded in 1871, falls under New York law because it is registered as a nonprofit in the state and does most of its financial business there.
The NRA works as a lobby group for the rights of gun owners anchored in the US constitution and also organizes safety courses on handling firearms. Critics accuse her of being jointly responsible for the numerous gun victims in the United States through her work.
