The National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research announced the occurrence of an astronomical phenomenon next day, called “the blue moon”, in the sky of Cairo.
The institute stated in a statement that the phenomenon is the occurrence of a full moon (the full moon phase) in the same month twice, as the month of Safar 1442 AH completed and became a full moon on October 1, and the month of Rabi` al-Awwal 1442 AH completes and becomes a full moon on October 31, 2020.
The institute added, that the moon will be blue in name only, as it is an agreed definition only to distinguish it from the first full moon of the same month, and the last blue moon was on March 31, 2018.
And the institute continued: “There is another definition of the blue moon, which could also be the third of four full moons in a single season, (where the season is between the solstice and the equinox).”
He explained that the next seasonal blue moon after October 31, 2020, is the moon of Muharram 1443 AH, which corresponds to August 22, 2021.
