KLM will clarify to the cabinet on Saturday at 12 noon about the wage sacrifices that the various unions are willing to make in exchange for the state aid that the airline receives. KLM has that on Friday communicated.
The airline must reach an agreement with trade unions on wage cuts and these agreements must last as long as the period of the state aid. This will run until 2025.
At the end of last month, KLM already concluded an ‘outline agreement’ with the unions and submitted the plan to the cabinet. However, Minister of Finance Wopke Hoekstra believes that it should be more clearly agreed that the wage sacrifices last until 2025.
KLM must therefore return to the unions to make even tougher agreements. The airline has now informed the unions about this and reports that it will provide clarity to the cabinet on the position of the various employee organizations at 12:00 tomorrow.
The airline does not want to redo the negotiations, but wants a so-called ‘commitment clause’ from the unions. With this, the unions must commit to the wage cuts that have been agreed. The employee clubs are currently considering this clause, KLM reports.
The state aid is essential for the airline company, which has been hit very hard by the travel restrictions. The aid consists of a loan of EUR 1 billion and a guarantee of EUR 2.4 billion.
