The new fastest car in the world, the SSC Tuatara, does not have its 508.73 km / h record confirmed by a world-renowned referee, the Guinness Book of Records, at least for now. And in part because of that, there may have been some speculation that the Americans were cheating a little.

One of the first to suggest this was youtuber Tim Burton, known as Shmee150. According to him, in the published video, the time it took for the car to pass between two clearly visible points by the road does not fit with the speed on the satellite tachometer. He compared Tuatara’s ride with Koenigsegg Agera RS, who its record of 444.6 km / h drove on the same road in 2017.

Shortly afterwards, another video from youtuber Misha Charoudin appeared, saying that the speed of the car in the video was about a quarter slower than the numbers shown by telemetry. The car’s instrument panel also shows a maximum of 301 mph (484.4 km / h). It doesn’t look good for SSC yet.

The carmaker, of course, responded to these questions in an interview for Top Gear magazine, which a few days ago was also the first to publish information about the broken record.

“Can you confirm that all the footage used in the final film came from one ride at a top speed of 331 mph (532.7 km / h)?” asks Top Gear. Jerod Shelby, head of the SSC, replies: “No, I can’t. We allowed the production company to release a film that took action in a record attempt, but that film was never intended to be evidence for entry in the Guinness Book of Records. “

Why did the display show a significantly lower number? That was his factory specification – Shelby said he shouldn’t have been able to show more. But it should stop at 301 mph and stay there while the car accelerates further, which did not happen. According to Shelby, however, it is not significant – its deviation was already some 24 km / h at 320 km / h, so they did not take it into account at all to determine the speed.

The actual measurement was performed using GPS, Dewetron technology and technology. She is no newcomer to the field of speed measurement, several of the same records have already been set, including the SSC Ultimate Aero record from 2007. However, the company has not yet confirmed that the car has really reached the measured speed.

However, none of this explains why the video does not fit. This is explained again by Jerod Shelby, this time for the American magazine MotorTrend: “Somehow there were inaccuracies in the editing of the video and I must admit that the SSC team did not check the accuracy of the video before it was published. We also didn’t realize that there were two videos from the cockpit, not one. “

According to Shelby, it seems that the editors of an external company mixed the data from the telemetry during a real record ride with a video that shows a slower ride. “Although we never intended to use video as evidence, we regret that the videos we shared were not an accurate record of what happened on October 10,” concludes Shelby, adding that the production company will publish a true record of the record drive in the simplest form and in the shortest time.
