Now that the corona virus has been on the rise for some time now, it seems time to pull out all the stops. Taking vitamin D would reduce the risk of getting infected. If the virus does get to you, the chance may be smaller that you will become very ill. This is what professors of immunology, scientists and doctors say in the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad.<!– –>
“Why on earth wouldn’t you take vitamin D?”, Says professor of immunology Huub Savelkoul. “There are so many indications in the scientific literature that vitamin D helps against corona.”
The argument has been made for some time that the ‘sunshine vitamin’ is effective against respiratory infections. There are now also strong indications that a daily vitamin pill can lead to a less serious corona infection.<!– –>
Not enough sun in the Low Countries
Due to a lack of sunlight, a third to half of the Dutch have a vitamin D deficiency in the winter. There is no reason to believe that this would be any different for Belgium.
Overweight people have to be extra careful, because the vitamin is lost in the fat tissue. People with a dark skin color are also more likely to have a deficiency, because dark skin absorbs the vitamin less well.
