Hanover (dpa / lni) – In view of the rising number of corona infections, the Lower Saxony State School Council has called for a mask to be required in class from the 5th grade. Since the chains of infection can no longer be fully traced, infection protection in schools must be expanded, said Marike Leder, deputy chairwoman of the state school council, on Thursday. “For us this means that we have to wear a mask in class from 5th grade onwards.” If more infections occur in schools in the coming weeks despite a mask requirement, the State School Council advises switching between face-to-face and online lessons.
School closings are not planned despite the nationwide rise in corona numbers. “The fact that the schools remain open shows the recognition of those responsible for the particularly high value of education. That is a very good sign,” said the chairman of the regional student council, Florian Reetz. “Schools have not been a source of infection so far.” The strict rules have had an effect. “Nevertheless, schools must now adapt to the increasingly serious situation,” he said.
According to the Landesschülerrat, an increasing number of unrecognized, low-symptom infections in schools must be expected. This makes it more and more likely to spread within the school, but also beyond, which would jeopardize the success of the four-week restrictions.
