Concert hall “Big Amber” will celebrate its 5th anniversary this weekend Press release

This weekend, on October 30 and 31, Liepāja Concert Hall “Lielais dzintars” will celebrate its 5th anniversary since the opening of the concert hall. The festival program is intended to honor the rich musical life of the city of Liepaja, the history of which can be measured over several centuries. In two evenings, listeners are invited to both exploratory pre-concert readings and a retrospective concert with the participation of the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra and brilliant soloists. The concert program will be played twice: on Friday, October 30 at 19 and Saturday, October 31 at 17.

“This time the anniversary concert will be like a retrospective journey through time. We will remember and celebrate the rich concert life of Liepaja, which has been active since the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. During the concert we will touch the 20th century, when the Liepaja Opera opened and the Liepaja The Philharmonic, until our days, when the concert hall “Lielais dzintars” shines in Liepāja, and bright stars of the world’s performing arts give us unforgettable musical moments and experiences, “says the artistic director Baiba Bartkeviča about the festival concert program.

Listeners will be able to enjoy a historically sound insight into the rich musical history of Liepaja and go on a retrospective trip together with pianist Agnese Egliņš, soprano Margarita Wilson and tenor Artjomas Safronovs. Throughout the concert, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, residing in the concert hall, will be on stage, without which the concert hall “Lielais dzintars” and the movement of music in Liepāja are unimaginable. Gintars Rinkevičs, the chief conductor of the LSO, at the conductor’s desk. The special guest of the concert will be Swedish-born, 19-year-old violinist, artist Deutsche Grammophon from Daniel Lozakovich, who will perform Peter Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The concert leader Orest Silabriedis will lead the listeners on an exciting journey.

Already with the first breath train “Lielais dzintars” connected Liepāja, Latvia and the world in a close thread. Past, present and future. Complementing the 5-year anniversary celebration program, one hour before each concert or on Friday, October 30 at 18 and Saturday, October 31 at 16 visitors are invited to attend the pre-concert reading “Liepāja Culture Watercolor. The Road in Music to the Great Amber”. Researchers of the University of Liepaja – Professor Ilze Valce and Doctor of Arts Vēsma Lēvalde – will share the research on the history of Liepāja’s music and creative life and the role of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra. Admission to the event is free of charge upon prior receipt of the entrance card to the concert hall information center. The event will take place in the Chamber Hall in the presence of up to 86 listeners.

The ambitious building – Liepāja Concert Hall “Lielais dzintars” was opened on November 6, 2015 with music by Liepāja Symphony Orchestra Agra Engelmannis and the most played young Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds. The concert program was crowned by the immortal masterpiece of Ludwig van Beethoven – the Ninth Symphony – in the interpretation of the State Academic Choir “Latvia”.
