Photo exhibition deals with educational opportunities for young women in Senegal

KIRKEL The educational opportunities of young women in Senegal are the subject of the current exhibition in the education center of the Chamber of Labor in Kirkel. In cooperation with the Saar friends of nature and the state photo group, 51 works by the photographer Barbara Straube will be exhibited there under the title “The Women of Bekhar”.

The Saarland Friends of Nature have been supporting projects in Africa for years and are working in the network of Friends of Nature Global. The proceeds from the peace café at the annual solidarity bazaar in Saarbrücken regularly go to local projects such as the women’s project in Saint Louis in Senegal. “Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world!” Nelson Mandela once put it in a nutshell. The basic idea is therefore that women gain access to social participation through education.

It began with the establishment of a women’s cooperative that processes and markets its own agricultural products. A kindergarten and a school were built to give the girls prospects for the future. The training center was completed in 2018 and offers more than 100 women professional training in the fields of sewing, dyeing, hairdressing, restaurants and the processing of regional products. The state-approved center also offers courses in environmental education and literacy.

Photographer Barbara Straube was also present at the opening of the Naturfreunde training center. In search of stories, for the unadorned world, for the people and realities behind the pictures, she had many conversations with the young women. In 51 portfolios she presents women and girls in portraits and with a short interview. The everyday situations of women are revealed. The hope for a future worth living in is photographed. Photos of the first trainees at the opening of the center, the salt farmers, the grain factory in Saint Louis and the kindergarten are shown.

The exhibition can be viewed until January 15, 2021 in compliance with the special hygiene regulations. Red./dos
