One of the indicators characterizing the development of e-commerce is the share of companies that sell goods or services on the Internet or other computer networks. In 2019, compared to 2018, this indicator increased by 1.7 percentage points, reaching 15.5%. The largest increase was in the group of large companies – by 5.4 percentage points, reaching 40.5%. In the group of medium and small enterprises, 20.8% of medium and 13.7% of small enterprises sold goods or services on the Internet (an increase of 4.0 and 1.1 percentage points, respectively).
At the beginning of the year, before the state of emergency in Covid-19, 74.7% of companies provided all or part of their employees with portable devices for mobile Internet use, which is 12.8 percentage points more than in 2019. Compared to 2019, this indicator increased by 13.6 percentage points in the group of small enterprises, but by 9.7 and 3.4 percentage points in the group of medium and large enterprises, respectively. 44.4% of all employees of the companies used the Internet for work, but 24.1% of the employees provided portable devices for the use of mobile Internet.
One fifth or 20% of companies employ their own ICT specialists, including 74.4% of large companies, 35.5% of medium-sized companies and 15.2% of small companies. In 2019, compared to the previous year, the share of companies that outsourced ICT responsibilities increased by 7.7 percentage points, and in total they accounted for 83.8% of all companies. The largest increase was in the group of small enterprises by 9.3 percentage points. In large companies, this indicator increased by 7.7 percentage points, but in medium-sized companies it decreased by 0.5 percentage points.
21.3% of enterprises used paid cloud services in 2020, and in two years this indicator increased by 6.8 percentage points, including in medium enterprises – by 9 percentage points, in large enterprises – by 8.4, and in small enterprises – by 6.2 percentage points. The use of almost all types of paid cloud services increased, but the largest increase – by 21.1 percentage points – was in the use of file storage services.
In 2020, 24.3% of all companies used the Internet of Things, or interconnected devices or systems that collect or exchange data and can be monitored or remotely controlled via the Internet. Every second (52.6%) large company used the Internet of Things, as well as 38.1% of medium-sized and 20.7% of small companies. Most – 47.3% of all companies used the Internet of Things in the sectors of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.
A survey on the use of ICT in enterprises was conducted in early 2020 with European Union co-financing. The aim of the project is to obtain high – quality and internationally comparable statistical information on the use of ICT in enterprises and the development of e – commerce in Latvia.
