From Bianchina to Aston Martin Lagonda Here are the ten ugliest cars ever built

Why were they produced? And above all: why did someone have the “courage” to buy them?

of Giosué Boetto Cohen

After many years it is easy to wonder how certain cars could have entered production. Having aroused interest on the drawing boards, passed the meetings of the “style center” and those with the CEO. Worse still, why people bought them. Sometimes with enthusiasm. But in the time in which these decisions were made, many factors influenced the work of the designers, from those of a technical nature (the evolution of machine tools, for example) to those of a commercial or legal nature (for example the new rules on the subject. safety). So let’s try to be magnanimous in drawing up this unlikely ranking, which, jumping arbitrarily between eras and brands, contains some truths, but is probably vitiated by personal taste. It could not be different: the automobile remains one of the most direct emanations of our “I”.

We can only start from the terrible Bianchina of Fantozziana memory. It was built by Autobianchi between 1957 and 1969 in a total of 320,000 units. The sedan version was especially not beautiful. Because? It had a poorly defined shape, with that pavilion out of proportion to accommodate the four passengers. And a series of slightly ridiculous affectations (starting with the pigtails). Half a century later, the Spartan Cinquecento is an icon, the Bianchina at most makes us smile.
