>> United States: one dead and eleven injured in shooting in Minneapolis
>> Nine dead, 27 injured in Chicago Memorial Day weekend shootings
The number of shootings increased by 97% and that of murders by nearly 45%, including 15 weeks of consecutive armed violence, in 2020 in New York City, according to the latest statistics from the New York Police (NYPD). Local media attributed this wave of crimes to the novel coronavirus pandemic and the decline in police morale in the face of a drastic reduction in their annual budget for 2021. Police intervened in 1,531 shooting incidents in the five districts of the city in 2020, or 754 more than for the whole of 2019, according to official sources. The NYPD Detective Bureau investigated 462 murders in 2020, 143 more from the year before. The city had not experienced such alarming violence since 2006, when 1,565 shootings were reported, noted Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, quoted by the daily. New York Daily News. At the other end of that painful toll, there has been a decrease in rape, thefts and assaults, although statistics show a rise in burglaries and car thefts, officials said.
