A traditional fish farm consists of floating rings in the sea with net baskets (cages) below. The fish thus swims in a kind of net bowl in the sea.
In addition, waiting cages, or slaughter cages, are often used by fish farms to store the fish outside the slaughterhouses.

The fire service pointed out that they could not get chlorinated out of the water, as is the case with oil spills, for example.
– There is nothing more we can do. Chlorine spreads very easily in water, so there is nothing we can do to collect it. We have not put out any booms or anything like that, said duty manager Jørn Eriksen at the 110 exchange when the fire brigade left the place on Tuesday morning.
– Seriously looking at this type of discharge
The Norwegian Coastal Administration states that they will ask Grieg Seafoods for an account of the environmental consequences of the discharge, and then see if it is necessary to start an investigation. The state administrator in Troms and Finnmark contributes with advice.
– On a general basis, we take this type of discharge seriously. Chlorine is toxic to aquatic organisms and has an acute toxic effect. In this case, it has meant that 460 tonnes of farmed fish (last estimate is 430 tonnes journ. Note) has died, writes section leader Anne Fløgstad Smeland at the state administrator in an e-mail.
– The discharge will, however, be diluted in the water masses in the fjord. As the concentration decreases, the acute toxic effect will also decrease. The overall environmental effects will therefore not be clarified until more information in the case has been obtained, they point out.
