9,500 Hectares of Bordeaux Vines Set to Be Uprooted to Combat Disease and Reduce Oversupply

Nearly 10% of the Bordeaux vines will be uprooted to counter a disease that attacks the foliage, but also to reduce volumes because Bordeaux wine is produced in too large quantities and prices are collapsing. In total, 9,500 hectares will be removed.

This number was set after long months of reflection and studies by the technicians of the interprofessional Bordeaux wine committee. “There are 110,000 hectares in Gironde, but really affected by this potential uprooting, it is 75,000 hectares. The proportion is significant, 9,500 out of 75,000it’s 1 in 7, 1 in 8″, explained the vice-president, Bernard Farges.

Prestigious vineyards and appellations are not affected : no grands crus, but small wines sold on average from 5 euros a bottle. Regional appellations are affected by this uprooting. Indeed, stocks weigh on the arms of winegrowers and tanks are unsold.

“It is useless to produce in order not to sell”, specified Bernard Farges, who added that Bordeaux wine prices will not be more expensive for consumers. “It will have no impact at all, it’s just that companies will be able to find a balance”. The grubbing-up campaign must cost 57 million euros : 38 million supported by the State, 19 by the interprofession. The first plots will be uprooted in autumn 2023.
