95% of workers would let their AI avatars perform tasks in meetings, survey finds

Headline: 95% of Professionals Open to AI Avatars in Meetings

In an era where technology reshapes our work environments, a recent study by TravelPerk reveals that a striking 95% of professionals are willing to allow AI avatars to handle tasks on their behalf during meetings. While skepticism remains about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace, this research shines a light on evolving attitudes toward AI’s integration, particularly in administrative and interpersonal tasks.

Research Insights on AI Avatars in the Workplace

The research, conducted in partnership with OnePoll, surveyed 4,000 business travelers from the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany between September 13 and 16, 2023. The findings indicate a willingness among employees to leverage AI avatars for various tasks, primarily focused on administrative functions. A significant 61% of participants expressed openness to having an AI handle reminders for deadlines and 53% favored AI managing meeting schedules.

Interestingly, the survey also revealed an emerging trust in AI for certain human-like interactions, with 34% willing to have avatars deliver presentations and 36% open to AI answering questions based on established guidelines and historical data. However, the prospect of AI making decisions is met with caution; only 13% of remote workers were comfortable with this, compared to 23% of onsite workers.

The Divide Among Worker Levels

When considering leadership roles, the data shows a notable divide between executive leaders and entry-level workers. Among those polled, 34% of executive leaders expressed willingness to let AI avatars make decisions during meetings, while merely 9% of entry-level employees mirrored this sentiment. This gap highlights the varied perspectives on responsibility and trust in AI technologies across different organizational levels.

Concerns Regarding AI’s Role

Despite the high willingness to engage with AI, 88% of respondents voiced concerns surrounding its implementation at work. One of the primary areas of worry is the potential for AI to misrepresent individuals, with 41% fearing that AI could negatively impact their professional relationships or fail to convey their personal communication styles authentically.

For younger generations, this sentiment is particularly relevant. Among Gen Z participants, 23% indicated that using AI avatars would encourage them to attend offices more often, contrasted with only 7% of baby boomers who felt the same. Furthermore, about 42% of all respondents stated that the use of AI avatars would make them more inclined to engage in face-to-face meetings.

Navigating the New AI Landscape

TravelPerk’s CEO and co-founder, Avi Meir, commented on the research findings, stating, "The hype around AI avatars that it could replace human connection is worrying, as I think the opposite is true—real-life interaction will become more essential." He emphasizes that the challenge lies in integrating AI technology thoughtfully to enhance, rather than detract from, human engagements.

The report closed with pragmatic advice for employees anxious about AI: focus on building skills that cannot be easily replicated by technology, such as relationship-building and critical thinking. Additionally, it encourages individuals to challenge AI outputs actively and to utilize technology strategically to foster a more efficient work environment.

Mixed Opinions on AI Benefits

Opinions on the benefits of AI avatars in the workplace are varied. While 47% of respondents believe avatars could enhance productivity, only 28% anticipate this would result in shorter working hours. Moreover, 22% remain concerned that relying on AI may hinder their prospective career advancements.

Looking Ahead

As the landscape of workplace technology evolves, so too does the conversation around AI’s role in our professional lives. This study urges businesses and employees alike to rethink how they incorporate AI into daily tasks while fostering authentic human connections. As we navigate this transformative period, engaging in discussions around the advantages and limitations of AI will be crucial for drawing a clear path forward.
