Undertaking a trip with New York as a destination is far from trivial, especially when you are 91 years old! However, this is what Jeanne Cousin, a Viviéroise still full of vitality, recently experienced.
Accompanied by Christiane, one of her daughters, she did not hesitate for a second to cross the Atlantic to visit her last great-grandson Léon, a little American born 7 months ago.
Jeanne greatly appreciated this trip and especially the welcome from Odile and Mathieu, Léon’s parents. They live in Brooklyn, on the 29th floor of a building, and the view of Manhattan and the East River has been a constant amazement for her.
On the program, there was a visit to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, a tour of Central Park by bike taxi, the skyscrapers with designs as creative as they are extraordinary, the view from the top of the Empire State Building or from the top of the One, the exuberance of Times Square but also the contemplation around the location of the Twin Towers, so many memorable memories for this beautiful trip. The whole family even found themselves in a jazz club to better take the temperature of this city-that-never-sleeps.
“There are not only wonderful things in New York,” says Jeanne. The metro is not really suitable for older people. Poverty exists alongside great wealth and the poor, unfortunate people are not rare. Then, it’s hard to escape hamburgers even if there are very good restaurants. Luckily, we ate at home most of the time. Americans also speak very loudly in the street or the subway, as if they were alone. Most often we took the ferry at the bottom of the building to visit Manhattan: the boat is still more practical than the metro: you can admire the city and its bridges in a different way and in the fresh air! New York is not a place where I would live, however, it lacks a bit of greenery like back home. But what I visited was magnificent and I don’t regret having seen and experienced all that! »
