It’s a holiday idyll on this September evening in a settlement near the Old Danube: evening swimmers head for the cool water. From nearby, you can hear alternating U6 and S-Bahn trains. Now and then, a dog barks.
The only thing that remains as a reminder of the concentrated police operation that morning is a blue marking on the entrance door to a single-family home at the end of Bahndammweg.
Blunt force
At around 9:40 a.m., police officers were called to the house in Floridsdorf. There they found the 91-year-old resident, who was lying in her bed with serious injuries. An emergency doctor from the Vienna rescue service could only confirm the woman’s death. Blunt force was used against the woman’s body. Relatives found her in the house and then informed the police.
“Yes, just take photos. It’s sad enough that something like this happens here.” A neighbor appears irritated when the KURIER inspects the area. “There’s nothing to see.” A construction worker a few houses down says that “the grandmother from across the street was standing at the fence the whole time this morning.” “Due to the situation in which the victim was found, it is assumed that someone else was at fault,” the police announced on Wednesday afternoon.
During the initial investigation and crime scene work, several signs of a break-in were also found on the windows. By early evening, the police were unable to confirm whether anything had been stolen or when the woman had died.
Autopsy ordered
In any case, a forensic pathologist has been called in. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office has begun investigations. “Investigations are currently being conducted in all directions against the unknown perpetrators. The forensic autopsy of the victim to determine the exact cause of death will take place today,” said the police.
According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, 72 suspected murder cases were reported last year. Of these, 42 involved women.
