90PLUS | Bundesliga | Despite the pandemic: clubs are increasing wage spending

News

News | All sports clubs lost a lot of income due to the corona pandemic. The salary costs of the 18 Bundesliga clubs still increased in the 2020/21 season.

Bundesliga starters spent 1.57 billion euros in salaries in 2020/2021

the DFL published the economic figures on Friday the past season. These yielded quite surprising findings. Because the 18 Bundesliga clubs transferred 1.57 billion euros to players and coaches in 2020/21 – and thus 120 million euros more than in the 2019/20 season.

Compared to the 2018/19 game year, where the corona virus did not play a role at all, the difference is even 135 million euros. The total turnover of the clubs, on the other hand, fell significantly, namely from 3.8 billion euros 3.47 billion euros.

The key to the recession proved to be the lack of them ticket revenue. The clubs 20/21 earned a meager 22.4 million euros. In the 2018/19 season, when there were no spectator restrictions, the clubs still collected 520 million euros from the sale of tickets.

The 2nd Bundesliga, on the other hand, adjusted to the reduced revenues caused by the pandemic. Salary expenses fell from 262 to 219 million euros. Donata Hopfen (46), Chairwoman of the DFL Management Board, stated: “We are experiencing an unprecedented turning point. The time when growth was almost taken for granted seems to be over.”

She continued: “Without a doubt, this will have a massive impact on our development over the next few years. But great challenges always offer great opportunities. It is important to find new ways of making German professional football economically future-proof – along our traditions and values.” However, she did not mention any specific measures.
