Prediabetes is a serious condition that currently affects about 88 million American adults. Before becoming diabetic, a person will experience a prediabetes phase. In this condition, there are actually signs that a person has diabetes, but it is often not realized.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that prediabetes can cause serious health complications over time. Although prediabetes is curable, studies have found that 85 percent of people with the condition are more likely to go on to develop type 2 diabetes.

A 2014 study published in the journal The Lancet notes that up to 70 percent of individuals with prediabetes will eventually develop diabetes. In a diabetes prevention trial in China, the cumulative incidence of diabetes over 20 years was even higher.

This study found that 90 percent prediabetes develop diabetes. Not only does it have a high potential for developing type 2 diabetes, the CDC warns that it also increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

“Over time, type 2 diabetes can affect nearly every major organ in your body, including blood vessels, nerves, eyes, and kidneys. If left untreated, complications of diabetes can be disabling or even life-threatening,” the Mayo Clinic statement said. BestLife, Monday (10/1/2022).

Then how to be cured? According to Michael Jensen, an endocrinologist, diabetes and metabolism specialist for the Mayo Clinic, certain lifestyle changes can lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of developing diabetes. One of the keys is achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

Obesity, Jensen says, plays an important role in disease because the body may need two to three times more insulin than a healthy body weight. When the pancreas tries to produce that much extra insulin, it can be pushed beyond its capacity, and the insulin-producing cells begin to die.
