Nearly 79,000 Ile-de-France residents took part in the referendum organized by the President of the Region Valérie Pécresse. 90% of voters oppose the removal of a lane from the ring road.
At the question, “Are you for or against the removal of a traffic lane for all?”, 90.2% of voters answered “non”, according to figures provided by the Ile-de-France region.
This consultation open to all Ile-de-France residents – the region has 12,184,000 inhabitants, including 9,379,996 adults, according to figures from INSEE IDF – was organized by the Ile-de-France Region from November 10 to 30. “It allowed 78,746 people to vote“, indicates the Region in a press release published on Wednesday which welcomes the strong participation in this referendum.
The results are final. “The results of this consultation show a massive rejection of the project of the city of Paris: 90.2% of Ile-de-France residents voted against the removal of a lane for all traffic on the ring road“, the statement read, highlighting the high turnout, “compared to other local consultations organized in Paris or in the regions, and which testifies to the strong interest of Ile-de-France residents in the future of this structuring infrastructure for their daily mobility.”
According to the Île-de-France Region, “uThe majority of unfavorable comments point to the risk of increased congestion and pollution, the practical difficulties and the danger associated with entering and leaving the reserved lane, the lack of details on the project and the users eligible for this route.”
In this pre-election period, the future of the device has become a political issue between Anne Hidalgo and Valérie Pécresse.
The mayor, PS candidate in the presidential election, wishes to reserve a lane for carpooling and “other virtuous modes“, at the end of the Olympic Games of 2024, and this over the whole of the 35 kilometers of the circular route.
The President of the Region and candidate for the candidacy within the Republicans is fiercely opposed to it and wishes to recover the management of the ring road.
She recalls that “on the ring road, 40% of journeys are from suburb to suburb and 80% of users are non-Parisians.”
She also wishes that “impact studies are carried out and discussed before launching the project to remove a reserved lane“.
