On July 16, the Mēžaparks stage was resounded with the song festival repertoire, world-famous songs from such groups as “Pink Floyd”, “Coldplay”, “The Beatles”, as well as compositions by Imantas Kalniņš, Mārtiņš Braun and Jānis Lūsēns.
The group “Melo-M” admits that the original idea of gathering a large group of performers continues to develop. “It’s grown over the years. We started with, I think, forty, then it was sixty, fifty, sixty. That goal was… I know that at the very beginning, when we talked, we thought – an orchestra. But orchestra – there’s everything there. The sound of the cellos is still special. Over the years, it has grown because more of these cellos were wanted, and there simply aren’t any halls in Latvia where we can accommodate so many cellists,” says musician Jānis Pauls. “Mežapark has such a history, I think the Latvian people have created both history and will shape the future. Especially this new, beautiful building, which just needs to be mastered, and there will be a very beautiful Song Festival and beautiful events.”
“Melo-M” musician Miķelis Dobičins emphasizes: “We want to invite young cellists to play, to love music and to do it for real. We want to show them that they can play in this way as well. It inspires us a lot and, I hope it also inspires young cellists and encourages them to learn this wonderful instrument and love music.”
Percussionists Miķelis Vīte and Mārtiņš Miļevskis also performed together with the young musicians. On the other hand, Ukrainian musician Darja Leleko took part in the premiere of Kārlis Auzāns’s composition “Together we can”. She plays an instrument rarely found in Latvia – bandura. The main purpose of the premiere is to show that society should be united.
The organizers of the concert hope that they will be able to supplement the program of the event in order to return with an even bigger lineup after two years.
