The victim, who was from the Dalit caste, India’s lowest caste, was the daughter of a poor scavenger couple who begged at a temple in Delhi’s Nangli area.
He was initially asked by his father to fetch water from a nearby crematorium cooler on Sunday.
When she did not return, her mother looked for her and found her daughter’s motionless body lying on the bench.
The victim’s tongue was reported to be blue and there were bruises on several parts of his body.
The mother was approached by the crematorium priest and three others who claimed her daughter had been electrocuted while fetching water.
They then demanded that the victim’s body be cremated immediately.
