9-Year-Old Boy with Autism Drowns After Going Missing in IKEA

NEW YORK — A family is grieving after a 9-year-old boy with autism drowned hours after he went missing while shopping with loved ones Wednesday night in Brooklyn, New York City Police said. York.

The little boy was with his family inside the IKEA store, located at 1 Beard Street, at about 8:58 pm, when his loved ones noticed that the minor was not with them, police said. It was at that moment that in the midst of the anguish they called the authorities and reported him missing.

Officers began searching the entire store and its surroundings, and the boy was caught on video walking out of the warehouse toward the water, which was behind IKEA, the uniformed woman added.

Given this, divers from the New York City Police entered the water shortly after 10:00 pm, and unfortunately after 12:00 am on Thursday the little boy was taken out of the water and transported to the NY Presbyterian hospital Brooklyn Methodist where doctors pronounced him dead.

“We at IKEA are devastated by this tragedy. Our hearts go out to the family at this difficult time,” the IKEA Brooklyn press office said in a statement.

The minor has not yet been identified and the authorities are investigating the facts.
