The parents had already searched for 30 minutes on the 25 kilometer long beach. Only then did they call in the rescue squad. Because the parents themselves had searched first, the necessary time had passed before the rescue brigade could take action. Herman Nieuwenhuis, the post commander, told RTV Rijnmond: “Because the parents did not know exactly where they were and had searched for half an hour ourselves, we lost valuable time on Wednesday to determine the correct location. For us, every second counts.”

Fortunately for the parents and the boy, he was rescued from the sea not much later.
