KOMPAS.com – Firearm first created in China, after the discovery of gunpowder there in the 9th century.
The earliest depiction of a weapons dating from the 12th century and firearm the oldest dates from around 1288.
Before the firing mechanism was created, the initial firearm had to be manually ignited with the axle fired into the touch hole.
As soon as the first firearms were introduced, weapons technology developed quite rapidly, as various kingdoms waged wars.
Since many weapons have been collected, its history and early examples have been well documented.

1. Heilongjiang Hand Cannon
The Heilongjiang hand gun is believed to be the oldest in the world.
Although the hand cannon was not a firearm, it was one of the first firearms ever made and the forerunner of modern weapons.
This special hand gun was discovered during excavations in 1970 in the village of Banlachengzi, China.
Researchers think that hand cannons were used in the battles between 1287-1288.
In records from a time period called Yuan History, a commander named Li Ting led a group of soldiers equipped with hand cannons, as part of an anti-insurgency campaign for the Yuan dynasty.
Today, the hand cannons are on display at the Heilongjiang Provincial Museum in Harbin, China.

As weapons technology advanced, different firing mechanisms were created.
Even though it’s a weapon matchlock older than wheellock, very few examples survive. However, many wheellock, which was first made in the early 1500s still exists.
Weapons wheellock was the first self-igniting firearm, meaning it could be fired efficiently with one hand.
Pistol wheellock a double barrel made for King Charles V, was one of the first surviving pistols, made around 1540-1545.
This weapon was invented by Peter Peck of Germany, who also made fine watches.
This weapon has two locks combined into a single firing mechanism, which means that each barrel can be fired separately.
This firearm is emblazoned with the personal coat of arms of Charles V, the double-headed eagle and the pillar of Hercules with the Latin motto PLVS VLTRA (meaning “Further”).

3. Tanegashima

Tanegashima is a weapon matchlock from Japan used by samurai and their warriors.
Weapons matchlock first introduced to Japan by the Portuguese in 1543.
Portuguese adventurers were forced to land on the island of Tanegashima when a storm hit.
The ruler of the island, Tanegashima Tokitaka, bought two gun matchlock from the Portuguese and asked a swordsman to copy the mechanism of the weapon. Yaita, who was first commissioned by Lord Tanegashima Tokitaka.
However, the blacksmith ran into problems, which were not resolved until the following year when a Portuguese arms maker was brought to Japan.
Over the next decade, more than 300,000 Tanegashima guns were produced, which changed the nature of Japanese warfare.
4. Georg von Reichwein revolver

The pistol belonging to Georg von Reichwein, a German officer in the mid-17th century, is the oldest revolver in the world.
The stamp on the gun provides definitive evidence that it was invented by Hans Stopler, a German arms blacksmith, in 1597.
The weapon was made for a person of high status and decorated with brass, bones and Mother of Pearl.
Unlike modern revolvers, this weapon had to be rotated manually.
Georg von Reichwein was the final owner of this weapon. He bought it when he was appointed major and commander of the troops at the Norwegian fortress Bergenhus in 1636.
The pistol is currently in the storage room of the Maihaugen Folk Museum in Lillehammer, Norway.
Georg von Reichwein’s revolver was put on display in 2014 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution.

One of the greatest advances in weapon technology was the invention of the flintlock mechanism.
The first flintlocks were invented in France in the early 17th century. The flintlock was in regular use for the next two centuries until the invention of the percussion lock.
An early example of the French flintlock pistol, was that of King Louis XIII.
These firearms were made in a workshop designed directly by Pierre Le Bourgeois’ brother, Marin.
He is usually credited with inventing the flintlock mechanism. The gun is decorated with a Louis XIII monogrammed crown and a scroll-shaped tip, a unique design.
Today, King Louis XIII’s pi weapon is on display at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 375.
6. Puckle weapons

The Puckle Gun was one of the first weapons to be called a “machine gun”, but its mechanism did not resemble a modern machine gun.
This pistol was patented by James Puckle in 1718. It was a single-barreled flintlock gun mounted on a tripod with a manually operated rotary cylinder.
Puckle thought it could be used on board as an anti-boarding weapon.
The puckle gun never attracted many investors and Puckle was unable to sell the gun to the British armed forces.
Two original examples of the Puckle gun are on display at Boughton House and Palace of Beaulieu.
These weapons were purchased by John Montagu, Duke of Montagu II, Master-General of the Ordnance in 1722.

7. Weapon Model 1777

The Model 1777 weapon is one of the most widely used weapons on the European continent.
Originally built in 1777 for the French Army. Trained French infantrymen are expected to be able to fire 3 shots in 1 minute with this rifle.
Between 1777-1826, about 7 million Model 1777 rifles were produced by Charleville, this number did not reach its peak until World War I.
In the early 1800’s, following the French Revolutionary War, Napoleon Bonaparte wanted his rifle to be slightly reworked.
The corrected model, “Model 1777 corrected, featured some minor modifications to the lock, bayonet and stock.”
Other minor improvements to the rifle occurred in 1816 and 1822.
8. Colt revolver

Although manual revolving guns have been around for centuries, the Samuel Colt pistol was the first truly successful revolver.
Colt received the first patent for his revolving mechanism in England in 1835 and a year later, he obtained a US patent.
In 1836, Colt founded the Patent Arms Manufacturing Company in Paterson, New Jersey.
Colt continued to manufacture weapons at the company until 1842 after a series of patchy successes.
Initially, Colt was unable to obtain a government contract for his weapons until 1846, when the Mexican-American War was underway.
Colt worked with Captain Samuel H Walker to improve his revolver and General Zachary Taylor ordered 1,000 Colt revolvers.
Colt weapons continue to grow in popularity and today, the Colt Manufacturing Company is one of the most widely recognized arms manufacturers in the world.
The Gatling rifle is considered the best example of the beginning of the fast firearm, which became the forerunner of the modern machine gun.
This pistol was designed in 1861 by Richard Gatling and patented the following year.
The Gatling gun was first used in warfare during the American Civil War.
Twelve weapons were purchased by the Untion commander and used during the siege of Petersburg, Virginia.
After the American Civil War, the Gatling gun was used in international conflicts, such as the Boshin War and the Anglo-Zulu War.
The rifle was also used by American troops during the Spanish-American War at the Battle of San Juan Hill.
Today, there are several automatic rotary machine guns that were influenced by the design of the Gatling gun.
