The police reported that at least nine residents died shortly after the outbreak of child kidnapping issues in Sinakma, Jayawijaya Regency, Province Papua Mountains, Thursday (23/2).
According to the Head of Public Relations of the Papua Police, Kombes Benny Adi Prabowo in Timika, kidnapping issue Children not only resulted in nine residents being killed, but also injuring six other residents.
Apart from that, a number of houses and kiosks in the vicinity were also burnt by the mob. Benny said that the initial riot occurred when residents in Sinakma suspected a car that was suspected of kidnapping children.
According to reports received by the police, the incident began at around 12.30 WIT, when the grocer’s car was stopped by residents because they were suspected of kidnapping children.
Members of the police led by the Jayawijaya Police Chief went straight to the crime scene after receiving the report and tried to resolve the case by bringing the suspected perpetrator to the police station.
“However, suddenly someone shouted and attacked the members so they asked for reinforcements from Wamena,” said Benny, as reported by Antara, Thursday (23/2).
Benny revealed, after the masses started to become anarchists, then personnel from Mobile Brigade and the TNI came, but the masses became increasingly anarchist by setting fires around the TKP. The officers fired warning shots.
In the incident, nine people were killed, seven of whom died from gunshot wounds.
“The crowds were brutal by attacking residents with various sharp weapons and traditional weapons and throwing new ones, causing some of them to be injured,” said Benny.
A number of stalls and residents’ houses were also burnt in the incident, but so far there has been no complete report on how many.
“Currently members are still on alert by conducting patrols to avoid unwanted things from happening,” he said.
