Nationwide journeys in public transport for nine euros a month – this should become a reality from June as part of the federal government’s relief package due to the high energy prices. In Baden-Württemberg, sales have already started in Stuttgart and Freiburg. The citizens are in great demand for the tickets, as the sales figures show.

Already more than 20,000 tickets sold in Stuttgart

The Stuttgart trams (SSB) sold around 23,000 9-euro tickets within five days up to and including Tuesday (May 17), a spokeswoman said. The tickets are sold via the digital SSB channels and the app of the Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association.

The 9-euro ticket is also popular in Freiburg

According to a spokesman, Freiburger Verkehrs AG has been offering the ticket at ticket machines and its own sales points since May 9th. The sales figure is currently in the low five-digit range. “We weren’t really surprised by the high demand for the 9-euro ticket,” said sales manager Simone Stahl. After all, it has a very high value with its nationwide validity in public transport.

Sale at the railway not yet started

At Deutsche Bahn, the sale of the 9-euro ticket is not expected to start until Monday, May 23rd. According to Deutsche Bahn, the last details of the implementation will only be known if the relief package is passed in the Federal Council on Friday, May 20th.

Tickets are valid from June – once the financing has been clarified

Due to the currently high energy prices, the tickets in June, July and August should enable trips on public transport and regional trains nationwide. At nine euros a month, they are significantly cheaper than normal monthly passes. The tickets are not valid on long-distance trains. The Bundestag will decide on the financing on Thursday and the Bundesrat on Friday. Some federal states consider the two and a half billion euros announced by the federal government to be too little and have threatened a veto in the Bundesrat, including Baden-Württemberg. If the Federal Council does not agree on Friday, then the 9-euro ticket can no longer come, at least for June.
