The nine countries that increased spending on dangerous weapons were the United States (US), Russia, China, Britain, France, India, Israel, Pakistan and North Korea (North Korea).
“While hospital beds are full of patients, doctors and nurses are working long hours and basic medical supplies are scarce, nine countries find they have more than USD72 billion for their weapons of mass destruction,” the ICAN report said.
According to ICAN, the 2020 spending figures represent a $1.4 billion increase over 2019 spending.
ICAN is an anti-nuclear weapons organization that won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
The ICAN report said the US spent $37.4 billion, about five percent of its total military spending last year.
China, the ICAN report continues, is believed to have spent around $10 billion, and Russia $8 billion.
Every Minute Rp1.9 Billion
The UK spent $6.2 billion. France $5.7 billion. India, Israel and Pakistan spent more than $1 billion. North Korea spent $667 million.
Taken together, the nuclear-armed nations spent more than $137,000 every minute in 2020.
The increase in spending comes not only as the world is grappling with its worst pandemic in a century, but also as many other countries are united to ban nuclear weapons.
