This Thursday, phil the groundhog will rear its lagging head again in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. It will do it to predict if we will have an early spring or if we still have six weeks of winter left. And this year, which is being especially cold, we are all interested in knowing.
Tradition, wintery and more American than chewing gum, has dictated so since the 19th century. The “fault” that the act has transcended cultures lies with “Caught in Time”, the 1993 film in which they starred Bill Murray y Andie MacDowell. A romantic comedy crossed with science fiction that also celebrates its 30th anniversary. Same as with the ‘Halloween’ of John Carpenter, which no one thinks of calling by its Spanish title (‘The halloween night’), a ‘Groundhog Day’ we all know her as ‘The Groundhog Day’. The story of a vain reporter who goes to Pennsylvania to broadcast the groundhog lore and ends up living, as if in a nightmare, the same day over and over again has become in a classic. So much so that we wanted to ask nine familiar faces what day of their lives they would repeat in a loop, over and over and over again. The answers will not leave anyone indifferent:
Jose Madrid
ANDRES TRAPIELLO (writer)
“In this, as in many other things, the best day is usually the one you are living, if you live it calmly. In my case, until today (4:30 p.m.) this would be worth it.”
RAMON FREIXA (chef)
“An ordinary day of my childhood with the smell of freshly baked bread in my grandparents’ bakery, in the small town of Barcelona where I grew up, Castellfollit de Ruibregós. An aroma that enveloped everything and that always evokes in me the memory of the warmth of those hugs and the laughter playing to be dependent in his dreamy grocery store”.
MARTA HAZAS (actress)
“My wedding day because it’s the best party I’ve had in my life, a basketball game in the morning included. Spectacular food, music to dance non-stop, karaoke… and my own great look. Also, surrounded by all the people I love, family and friends who made a pineapple between them. I would say that it would be ‘Groundhog Day’ with more good vibes and love than you can dream of and repeat in an infinite loop. The plus: that same weekend they confirmed us that our series ‘Little Coincidences’ would take place.
ROBERTO TORRETTA (fashion designer)
“The day I received, from HM Queen Letizia, the 2015 National Fashion Award in recognition of my entire professional career at the Madrid Costume Museum, an emblematic place of Spanish fashion.”
MARIO VAQUERIZO (singer and actor)
“Although in my day to day I like to improvise, in reality I am quite Germanic and ‘marmoetero’, since I am lucky that I really like my work and my daily chores. That is why I would repeat a concert with nancysI would repeat doing television and radio, I would repeat shooting a film again and I would also repeat the weekends with my wife in our country house, any Sunday at the Rastro de Madrid, getting up early to go to the gym, eat with my parents and go out with my friends… Anyway, I have no problem that every day of my life is the same, I feel very lucky to think that the life I lead is the one I have chosen and it makes me feel a constant sense of self-affirmation”.
CARMEN POSADAS (writer)
“I would repeat over and over again the moment when my father, after reading my first book, wrote me a long letter from Montevideo in which he argued why he thought it was a great novel. He was in love with literature, with those people learning Russian to read Tolstoy and classical Greek to read Homer and of course I didn’t pay compliments to anyone Later in my life I’ve had positive reviews from ‘New York Times’, ‘Le Monde’ and many other newspapers. But nothing has meant as much to me as that letter from my father.”
SAÚL CRAVIOTTO (canoeist and Olympic champion)
“The first time I stood on an Olympic podium (in Beijing 2008). It was an instant in which I felt that all the years of training and sacrifice had been worth it. It was a moment of pride and personal fulfillment that I will never forget.”
JOSEBA ARGUIÑANO (cook and pastry chef)
“There are many moments that I would relive over and over again: the publication of my first cookbook, the day we launched the workshop… but on a slightly more personal level, I would say when my children cooked our first dish with me. We had a pipe and how tasty it was! From then on they want to help me many times and seeing them enjoy themselves in the kitchen is a real joy”.
ISABEL JIMENEZ (journalist)
“My groundhog day would be in any corner of the world with my families and very close to the sea. Few things make me so happy, so at peace and connecting with what really matters. I can’t see myself reliving another day more than that”.
