Housing assistance applications for eligible Travis County residents who need help with monthly rent or mortgage payments opened Tuesday.

Residents must live in Travis County and household income must not exceed 250% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines, depending on household size, to be eligible for assistance.

The program, which has $9,155,552 available for assistance, has been funded through Travis County’s general fund and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund (LFRF) which the county says are provided under the American Rescue Plan Act.

The following items are required of all applicants:

  • Photo ID
  • Proof of household income for the last 30 days for all household members
  • Current rental agreement or mortgage statement
  • Signature of homeowner or mortgage lender on a form provided by the Travis County Department of Health and Human Services

People who need help have until September 30, or until all available funds have been disbursed, to apply for assistance.

The owner or mortgage company will receive the payment directly if the application is approved. The county will help eligible residents pay up to three months of their mortgage or rent.

Payments will not exceed what is due in 30 days and payments per month will not exceed the following average rents in Austin at the beginning of the year:

  • Efficiency: $1,334
  • One bedroom: $1,500
  • Two bedrooms: $1,900
  • Three bedrooms: $2,395
  • Four or more bedrooms: $2,795
